A New Way of Experiencing Home Dialysis

The time consumed by dialysis sessions is one of the most frustrating aspects of having to live with malfunctioning kidneys. Hence, home - or even better portable - dialysis devices are the dream of many end-stage kidney disease patients. Whereas portable devices are slowly reaching marketability, a new state-oft-the art machine suitable for home dialysis has recently obtained FDA approval. Developed by Outset Medical in San Jose, California, the TABLO dialysis machine seems to represent the next step in home dialysis treatment on demand.

Although I am overall satisfied with my hemodialysis treatment, the recent and still on-going COVID-19 pandemic brought additional (sometimes critical) strain to my local dialysis facility. Having to use the same room as critically-ill COVID-19 patients (usually dialysed at night) is somewhat awkward. Thus, for the past few month I have explored the possibility of switching to home hemodialysis. As a scientist myself and being married to a biologist, I am pretty confident we would manage home hemodialysis with a very good clinical outcome.

What I like about the TABLO machine are its many features, such as touchscreen guidance and wireless connectivity, allowing for easy use and safe data keeping for staying in touch with my health professionals. The biggest advantage, perhaps, is that TABLO does not require a separate water purification system but can be operated with tap water. Lastly, it looks pretty sleek. For a full set of specifications, please see here.

The biggest remaining question aside from the costs: when will this device be available outside of North America? Fingers crossed rather sooner than later.
