Keeping Active - Part 1 of 4.
After 4 years of hemodialysis, it is quite obvious - at least to me - that physical activity is a key hallmark of various parameters important in a CKD Stage 5 patient's life:
staying fit
obtaining good (better to say satisfactory) monthly blood results
being able to work (if at a reduced load)
general well-being
Aside from regular weight training to maintain muscle mass and cardio-training, I also try to make it a point to engage in physical activities that are just pure fun and at the same time somewhat challenging (just to proof a point to myself). Ideally with friends and/or family.
Here is Part 1 of a series of recent activities I was able to accomplish: Climbing Mt. Batulao - a 5h hike.
Mt. Batulao, Batangas/Cavite, Philippines (February 2023)
As physical activity is basically no topic at all at my dialysis center, I unfortunately have been witnessing many hemodialysis patients of my age and younger becoming more and more immobile over time. Hence, I would hope that other dialysis patients, especially those where the support network is less sophisticated than the one in many Western countries, are perhaps motivated to make sports activities a top priority in their regular routines.
